How do I install extra fonts?

  1. Make sure the universe and multiverse repositories are enabled. (See How do I add Universe and Multiverse?)

  2. Install the font packages with Synaptic (See How do I use Synaptic to install packages?)

    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-arabic
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-asian
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-chinese
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-chinese-big
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-european
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-japanese
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-japanese-big
    Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe) > xfonts-intl-phonetic

  3. Rebuild the font information cache files

    sudo fc-cache -f -v

How do I install the Chinese Input Method (SCIM)?

  1. Make sure the universe repository is enabled. (See How do I add Universe and Multiverse?)

  2. Make sure you have the Chinese fonts installed. (See How to Install Extra Fonts.)

  3. Install the scim packages with Synaptic (See How do I use Synaptic to install packages?)

    Utilities (universe) > scim
    Utilities (universe) > scim-chinese
    Utilities (universe) > scim-config-socket
    Utilities (universe) > scim-gtk2-immodule
    Utilities (universe) > scim-tables-zh

  4. wget -c https://frankandjacq.com/ubuntuguide/fireflysung-1.3.0.tar.gz
    sudo tar zxvf fireflysung-1.3.0.tar.gz -C /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ 
    sudo chown -R root:root /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fireflysung-1.3.0/ 
    sudo fc-cache -f -v

  5. System->Preferences->SCIM Input Method Setup

  6. To activate SCIM press Ctrl-Space.
