Chapter 4. Installing Red Hat Virtualization packages on the host

The virtualization packages, for the host, must be installed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux to utilize Red Hat Virtualization. If the virtualization packages are not installed you can install the necessary host packages either during the installation sequence or afterwards using the yum command.

4.1. Installing Red Hat Virtualization during a new Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation

Installing Red Hat Virtualization packages is easy as part of a fresh install.
During the installation sequence package selection step, select the Virtualization package. If that package is selected the Red Hat Virtualization packages will be available after successful installation.

Note

You require an RHN Virtualization entitlement in order to receive updates to virtualization packages.
Installing Red Hat Virtualization with a Kickstart file
This section describes how to use a Kickstart file to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the virtualization packages. Kickstart files allow for large, automated installations without a user manually installing each individual system. The steps in this section will assist you in creating and using a Kickstart file to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the Red Hat Virtualization packages.
More information on kickstart files can be found on Red Hat's website, redhat.com, in the Installation Guide for your Red Hat Enterprise Linux version.
